Lovely Poem Of President Day 2017  :

George Washington, Adams and Jefferson three
First rulers of Uncle Sam's land of the free:
Then Madison, Monroe and Adams again
All clever and upright and good honest men;
The Jackson, Van Buren and Harrison first,
Tyler and Polk whose terms were so curst
By war with the Mexicans who lost in the fray -
Then Taylor and Fillmore and Pierce held their sway.
Buchanan and Lincoln, Johnson and Grant,
Then Hayes, martyred Garfield, despiser of cant,
Arthur and Cleveland, Harrison (Ben)
McKinley the martyr, beloved by all men;
Then most energetic and strenuous Teddy
And plump William Taft for a second term ready
When Wilson was placed in this nation's great chair
And promised to always rule wisely and fair.

President's Day? Presidents' Day? Or Presidents Day?
Regarding spelling, what's the difference?
Even apostrophes must have their say,
Subtly shading each rendition's sense.
In the first, Washington alone
Deserves the day, the only president
Every state has honored on its own.
Nor does the change of date change what is meant.
The second rendition suggests that Lincoln, too,
Should share the honor, combining holidays
'Tween their birthdays, giving both their due,
Depending on which state such honor pays.
All presidents, too, the second could convey,
Yet the third one must be read that way.
Poems for Presidents Day 2017

The President of our country
Has many jobs to do.
He gives a lot of speeches
And helps our people too.
He leads our troops
To keep us safe and strong.
And he makes some tough decisions
When problems come along
Poems for Presidents Day 2017

Greatness is the child of choice and chance,
Even when one's character is right.
One must fit the urgent circumstance,
Requiring wrongs that one's gifts can requite.
Greatness needs a time that calls for greatness,
Embracing an entire generation,
When some grave danger, failure, or injustice
Awaits a leader to unite the nation.
So might the mantle fall upon a soul
Having just the qualities to be
In mien and temper suited to the role.
Nor ought one, chosen, turn down history.
Greatness waits upon one like a bride
That knows well one's humility and pride,
On which she plays to keep one by her side.
Nor, after, will one care how much she lied.
Poems for Presidents Day 2017

"I wish that I could be as great
As Washington," said Joe.
"You can, my dear," his mother said,
"If you but will it so."

"But how?" urged Joe. "I cannot do
The things he did - to be
As great as he was would just mean
A General, you see."

"A General, my little lad,
You can be if you will.
A climbing boy can always reach
The summit of the hill.

"But to be great, we first must be
Brave, kind and good and true;
And Washington was all of these,
Though but a boy like you."

"Perhaps," said Joe. "I'd better try
To be just good, and when
I am as old as Washington
I may be like him then."
